Review: Pocket Guide to the Mass
The Mass. The Source and Summit of our faith as Catholics. The place where we meet God in the flesh.
We know how important the Mass is, and most of us know that we are called not to be spectators but active participants. If we are being honest, however, sometimes our minds wander. Sometimes focus eludes us. Even when we give our best effort and come away from Mass satisfied with our participation, questions may arise: Why is that phrase used? What is Father whispering under his breath? What is the meaning of that action? How should I pray in the silent moments?
The Pocket Guide to the Mass Helps Catholics Understand the Liturgy
Ascension Press has released a lovely new book titled The Pocket Guide to the Mass by Dr. Edward Sri and Fr. Mike Schmitz. I wasn’t sure what to expect when this book arrived, but I was immediately struck by how comprehensive it is as I flipped through its pages. I wondered if this would make it a bit lofty or less accessible to most Catholics, but I am happy to say I was wrong.
Dr. Sri and Fr. Schmitz manage to make the comprehensive accessible, and this book does exactly what it is intended to do: help Catholics come to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Mass. It shows them how to “see the Liturgy not as a familiar ritual, but as a profound encounter with Christ.”
I found the introduction to be especially powerful, explaining why we should always continue to grow and nurture our love of the Mass, and reiterating the Real Presence of Christ and our need for awareness of that Presence. After the introduction, there truly is something for everyone, from a discussion of the theology of the Mass to the Biblical Roots. I especially loved the sections on how to prepare for Mass and what to do if your mind wanders.
A Practical Companion for Active Participation at Mass
In the center of the book, you will find the Order of the Mass. This is the section of the book that serves as a companion for you in worship. It walks through the Liturgy, explaining things briefly as it goes. For instance, we are reminded to make an offering to God as the offertory gifts are brought up. This section assists us in knowing how we are to be active participants.
You then have a fully written-out “teaching Mass” from Father Mike Schmitz, which you can view as a video HERE. Then the final section gives some beautiful prayers to pray before Mass, after communion, and after Mass.
Why I Recommend The Pocket Guide to the Mass
All in all, while I expected this to be another solid resource from Ascension, it exceeded my expectations. I would recommend it without hesitation to any Catholic who desires to grow in their love of the Mass.
