Suggested credit: One full semester Literature credit. For a full year of credit, register for Les Misérables: Avid Reader/Listener Series in the spring semester.

Seize the opportunity to accomplish something BIG! Undertaking this course in the Avid Reader/Listener Series is not for the faint of heart… yet, the book War and Peace contains well-wrought storytelling worthy of exploration. In addition to learning great vocabulary, you will also delve into a weekly analysis of literary devices (elements and techniques), expanding your knowledge of what they are and how they are displayed in the assigned text. Finally, each week, we will use Socratic discussion to dig deeper into the moral dilemmas found in this appealing prose, all within the constructs of our Catholic faith.
Special Notes: Not all translations are the same. This course uses the Aylmer & Louise Maude translation. Students are more than welcomed to listen to the audiobook if they prefer it. Also, this is a companion course and is part of the Avid Reader/Listener Series. We highly recommend registration in the Les Misérables course for your next course in this series.
This course covers all fifteen parts and both epilogues of War and Peace

Course Materials:
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, unabridged, Translators: Aylmer Maude & Louise Maude, ISBN-13: 978-1853260629. Utilizing a used copy is fine and often more affordable (see www.bookfinder.com). A free digital version can be found at: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2600. An eBook or Audiobook is also acceptable, as long as it is the Maude translation. NOTE: Other translations will not work well with this course.
Online resource: Quizlet.com. Free student accounts are available.
Homework: Students should plan to read/listen around 5 hours per class. There will be a test or quiz each class covering vocabulary and literary devices. Quizlet sets will be utilized to master vocabulary and literary devices.
