History of Renaissance Science, Part One

Learn about the influencers who lived during the Renaissance and their scientific accomplishments. Discover the Renaissance scientists and how their work influenced the world through medicine, music, weaponry, architecture, and more. (If you have younger students, this course fits with the Homeschool Connections Grade School Unit Study Program for grades 3-6 so that your whole family can learn the same era together.)

Suggested credit: One full semester World History, History of Science, or Renaissance History

Description

The renaissance was a time of great change, the entire medieval worldview broken apart as great discoveries in the stars, upon the earth, and in the smallest molecules bring about a re-conception of the universe. We will be going through these discoveries, and discussing the social and historical implications of them.

Week 4: Astronomy pt. I

Week 5: Astronomy pt. II

Week 6: Review for Midterm

Week 7: Economic Changes, the putting-out system, and technology.

Week 8: Blast-Furnace, Gunpowder, and warfare

Week 9: Printing Press and communication

Week 10: Instruments and Music

Week 11: Art and Architecture

Week 12: Review for Final

Course materials: Readings provided FREE by the instructor as PDF files.

Homework: Expect to spend about 45 minutes of reading each week plus review and a weekly quiz (auto-graded by the computer for immediate feedback).
