Have fun and learn about writing and expression with an exploration into song lyrics, from folk to Hip Hop — and learn how, no matter what the style, lyrics and poetry work together to influence and emotionally connect us with story and song.

Description

What makes good song lyrics and what do these lyrics tell us about poetry? Look together at all kinds of songs — and analyze lyrics from folk songs, light opera, musical theater, old standards, novelty tunes, pop, rock, and even some hip-hop — and even try your hand at writing our own lyrics!

Materials and Homework

Course materials: Will be provided free by Mr. O’Brien in the form of PDFs.

Homework: Daily assignments will consist of short computer-graded quizzes which provide immediate feedback, as well as brief reflections or essay answers graded by Mr. O’Brien. Homework should take no more than one hour per day in addition to class time.
