Ridiculous Rhymes: Humor and Nonsense in Poetry

“Nonsense poetry” isn’t just a whole lot of fun — it’s a wonderful way to learn poetic meter, form, and imagery and enjoy the sound and thinking skills that go into the creative process for highly-enjoyable poetry.

Suggested grade level: 6th to 8th

Suggested credit: ½ semester Literature, Poetry, or English

Description

Many students find poetry difficult and unenjoyable – but in this course, students will have a blast! Mr. O’Brien will present the funniest and most entertaining poems that exist and he will read them aloud in class. Students will learn from these examples the essence of poetry – rhyme, meter, imagery, etc. We will even try our hand at writing some poems in class!

  3. Funny poems from the Old Days
  4. Funny poems from the Almost New Days.
  5. Funny poems from Almost Today!
  6. Final Project: The Best Funny Poems by our Students!
Materials and Homework

Course materials: Kids Pick the Funniest Poems, Edited by Bruce Lansky. ISBN-10 : 067174769X / ISBN-13 : 978-0671747695 (https://amzn.to/36X205E). PDFs provided free by the Instructor.

Homework: There will be a Final Project, in which students will write their own funny poems. There will be little reading outside of class. Plan on about a half hour to an hour of homework each week outside of the live class.
