Our Pioneers and Patriots

Using Philip Furlong’s Our Pioneers and Patriots as a framework and guide, this course roughly traces the course of the United States from its multi-national European origins up through the Presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. This includes an examination of English, French and Spanish influences in the New World; the Revolution; expansion; and the Civil War. This course is an excellent follow-up to “The Old World and America” offered in the Fall 2019 semester.

Total classes: 14

Prerequisite: None, though we recommend taking Dr. Martin’s class, “The Old World and America” BEFORE taking this class

Suggested grade level: Middle School (Note: Adjustments can be made to assignments in order to accommodate high school students.)

Suggested credit: Full semester

Homework:

Read selections from each unit of Furlong, approximately 15 pages, per week, of reading (NOTE: High School students taking this class will have a heavier reading load.)

Writing is an integral part of demonstrating both the assimilation of knowledge and the articulation thereof. Therefore, students will be guided through the process of writing a short (1-2 page, double-spaced) review of a book of their choice relevant to the subject matter. (NOTE: High School students taking this course must instead write a 3-5 page book report.)

Weekly, optional, extra-credit, review quizzes based off of classroom lectures and discussions.
