Continue your middle school math studies with this foundational course.

Prerequisite: Students should have already been introduced to fractions and should be able to perform basic math operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing).

Suggested grade level: 6th grade (advanced 5th graders welcome)

Suggested credit: One full semester math.

Description

Middle School Math 1 covers fractions, decimals, integers, data analysis, algebraic expressions and equations, functions and inequalities, using formulas, and surface area and volume in a way that will be easy to understand and will provide a strong foundation for the coming math courses.

Week Two: 8.4 – 8.6: Multiplying and Dividing Integers; The Coordinate Plane

Week Three: 9.1 – 9.3: Properties; Solving Addition and Subtraction Equations

Week Four: 9.4 – 9.5: Solving Multiplication and Two-Step Equations

Week Five: 9.6 – 9.7: Functions and Graphing Functions

Week Six: 10.1 – 10.3: Ratios; Solving Proportions; Scale Drawings and Models

Week Seven: 10.4 – 10.6: Percents, Fractions, and Decimals

Week Eight: 10.7: Percent of a Number

Week Nine: 11.1: Theoretical Probability

Week Ten: 11.2, 11.4: Outcomes; Probability and Area

Week Eleven: 12.1 – 12.3: Length, Capacity, and Weight in the Customary System; Length in Metric System

Week Twelve: 12.4 – 12.5: Mass and Capacity in the Metric System; Changing Metric Units

Week Thirteen: 14.1 – 14.3: Area of Parallelograms, Triangles, and Circles

Course Materials: Mathematics: Applications and Concepts, Course 1, Student Edition (Glencoe Mathematics), 2006 Edition. We recommend purchasing the book used as they can be found for as little as $0.99 plus shipping:

Homework: 3-4 lessons per week with 10-20 homework problems per lesson, 2 short quizzes per week, and a chapter test approximately every other week.
