Join this course to become knowledgeable about the U.S. government and learn how to be a proactive member of our democratic society.
This course is an introduction to the American government for middle school students. It is a continuation of Middle School Civics: Part One. However, Part One is not a prerequisite for taking this course. This course will explore the Bill of Rights, and the 13th, 14th, 15th, 19th, and 26th Amendments. This class will also introduce the “linkage institutions” that connect people to government, including elections, media, political parties, and special interest groups.

Class Two: First Amendment – Freedom of Religion
Class Three: First Amendment – Freedom of Speech
Class Four: Second Amendment – The Right to Keep and Bear Arms
Class Five: Freedom from Unreasonable Searches and Seizures – Fourth Amendment
Class Six: Criminal Rights – Fifth and Sixth Amendments
Class Seven: The Eighth Amendment – Freedom from Cruel and Unusual Punishment / Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment – Due Process
Class Eight: Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments – Civil Rights
Class Nine: Elections
Class Ten: Review
Class Eleven: Project Presentations
Course Materials: All materials will be provided FREE by the instructor.
Homework: Homework will include regular questions and answers. Also, some videos will be assigned. Homework should take a student 1-2 hours per week outside of class to complete. There will also be a final project.
Class dates: Mondays, January 8 to March 25, 2024. (No class Feb. 12)
